Cycling tour around Lake Constance

You're probably also thinking about alternatives to travelling in these COVID19 times. We decided to hire a motorhome and drive through Germany. It was a gloriously sunny Thursday and anyone who has ever been to the Lake Constance region knows how beautiful it is here in summer. Many orchards and vineyards grow on the hills around the lake. The lake itself is such a beautiful turquoise colour that you just want to jump into the water and celebrate life. We opted for a circular cycle tour around Lake Constance, combining cycling and a boat trip.

Lake round trip from Überlingen, first stage Wallhausen and Constance

As we had parked our motorhome at a park4night campsite near Überlingen, we decided to start the cycle tour from there. We bought a bike tour ticket, which is quite cheap at EUR 11 per person and bike (2020), and then travelled to Wallhausen by boat. The boat trip takes about 20 minutes. From Wallhausen, you follow a very nice cycle path for about 11 kilometres directly along the lake. During the journey, you should definitely spend the night in one of the beautiful houses right on the lake. You can also make a stopover on the island of Mainau, but you have to pay an entrance fee to get onto the flower island. We drove on and ended up in Constance, where you eventually cross the Rhine bridge into Constance harbour. Constance itself is quite a nice town with a pretty old town centre, which is definitely worth a visit. We enjoyed the lake view from a beer garden near the lake and took a cool dip on the Swiss side.

Second stage Meersburg to Überlingen

The boat took us back to the town of Meersburg, which is on the lake side from which we came, within 20 minutes. Meersburg is also a nice place to visit. There are many shops, cafés and restaurants next to the castle. As the town is a main attraction for tourists, we headed straight back to Überlingen. After leaving the main road, the path leads through the countryside along the shore of the lake. You reach Überlingen after about 12.5 kilometres. The cycle tour itself is very easy and there are no major climbs. The atmosphere of these places is incredible and you should not miss out on this experience during your stay at Lake Constance.
